Grid Computing Topic of 10/31 BEACON Lecture

Steve Armentrout, the CEO of Parabon Computation, will present
practical applications of extreme-scale grid computing in a variety of
domains including nanotechnology, decryption and biometrics in the next BEACON Lecture scheduled for noon on October 31 at the Lockheed Martin BEACON Center in White Hall (Fairmont), WV.

Parabon's Frontier Grid Platform runs some of the largest public
computational grids in the country, including the Compute Against
Cancer network and the Global Grid Exchange (G2EX), based in
Fairmont, WV.  This presentation will begin with an overview of
Frontier-based applications in several disparate domains.  Then, in a
live demonstration, a password-protected Microsoft(r) Word(r) document
will be cracked using 1,000 computers that provide power to G2EX.
Applications from nanotechnology, data mining and bioinformatics will be
discussed and potential applications to biometrics will be explored.
Finally, criteria will be presented that characterize the types of
applications that are well suited for grid computing, providing
attendees a basis from which to determine how grid computing might
benefit their work.
